Candle care 101: How to Get the Most From Your Candle

Candle care 101: How to Get the Most From Your Candle

There’s something magical about lighting a candle — the soft glow, the cozy crackle of a wooden wick, the way a scent instantly shifts the mood in your home. But to enjoy your candle safely and make it last longer, a little candle care goes a long way.

Whether you’re new to candles or have been burning them for years, here are the simple basics that will help you get the best experience every time.

1. Always Trim Your Wick

Before each burn, trim your wooden wick to about ⅛ inch.
A shorter wick helps your candle burn cleanly, prevents soot, and keeps the flame calm instead of dancing too high.

If you don’t trim it, the wick may struggle to stay lit or burn too hot.

2. Let the Wax Pool

For your first burn, keep the candle lit long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the vessel.
This helps avoid tunneling and ensures your candle burns evenly from start to finish.

A good rule: about 1 hour of burning for every inch of the candle’s diameter.

3. Avoid Burning for Too Long

Even though it’s tempting to keep the cozy vibes all day, don’t burn your candle for more than 3–4 hours at a time.
Long burns can cause the wooden wick to dancing too high or the vessel to overheat.

Blow it out, let it reset, and relight later if you want more ambiance.

4. Keep It Away From Drafts

Airflow can make the flame flicker, burn unevenly, or produce soot.
Place your candle somewhere stable and away from fans, open windows, or high-traffic spots.

5. Safety First

Always burn your candle on a heat-resistant surface and never leave it unattended.
Keep it out of reach of pets, kids, and anything that could catch fire.

It sounds simple — because it is — but it makes all the difference.

6. Store Your Candles Properly

Keep candles out of direct sunlight and away from heaters or windowsills.
Heat can soften the wax and affect fragrance performance.

A cool, dry shelf is perfect.

7. Know When It’s Time to Say Goodbye

Stop using your candle once there’s about ½ inch of wax left at the bottom.
This protects the vessel from overheating and ensures safe use until the very end.
